Yale Veterans Association at Saturday’s Game

Monday, November 16, 2015

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – As part of Heroes Day at Yale Bowl on Saturday, which resulted in a convincing 41-14 Bulldog win over Brown, the Yale Veterans Association was proudly represented by some of its heroic members.

The YVA, in partnership with the West Haven VA, brought a large group of blind veterans to the Yale football game in conjunction with the Heroes Day theme. The group sat in a reserved section with their volunteer escorts, who included Navy ROTC shipmen and Air Force ROTC cadets.

Other members of the YVA and Yale veteran community also joined in on the festivities surrounding the special day, which included a dinner for the veterans and volunteers – allowing multiple generations of military service members to share experiences and camaraderie.

With Veterans Day coming up on Wednesday, it is a proper thank-you to those men and women, past and present, who serve to protect the people of the United States.

The YVA has built a multi-year collaboration with the Veterans Administration Connecticut Health System (VACHS), specifically at the West Haven VA Hospital in the Blind Rehabilitation Center.

A goal of the YVA is to continually expand its activities to the Yale community and beyond, including other veterans’ service organizations and local community partners.

The collaboration between the YVA and Blind Rehabilitation Center has allowed Yale alumni, students, faculty and staff to interact with the Veterans Hospital patients and learn more about firsthand military service.

Saturday’s game against Brown was another example of the bond that Yale University and the Yale football team has formed with the YVA, in an effort to honor those brave enough to serve for the greater good.
