What is your current role at Yale University?

I have been working at the Undergraduate Admissions Office for over 30 years, and my titles are:

  • Associate Director of Admissions
  • Director of Admissions, Eli Whitney Students Program
  • Director of Veterans Outreach
While I am not a military veteran, my role in the Undergraduate Admissions Office have worked closely with many Yale College student veterans. I serve as the point of contact for veterans and service members who wish to learn more about Yale College and about admissions, and I manage the veterans recruitment and application review process. Our student veterans add tremendously to academic and community life at Yale. It has been wonderful to serve this community, and I am delighted that Yale is committed to increasing the veteran student population. When I started working with the Eli Whitney Students Program in 2008, there may have been only one or two enrolled veterans in Yale College, compared with 40 undergraduate student veterans in the 2023-2024 academic year.

Could you discuss some of the intangible skills that veterans bring to an organization?

While I am not a veteran, I feel strongly that veterans from the enlisted ranks add much to the Yale student community. Because of their military experience, veterans bring very different perspectives to campus that our traditional aged students simply do not have. For example, a veteran who has been deployed overseas often share different points of view in their Global Affairs, Economics, Humanities, Political Science, and Global Health classrooms.

What do you think about the Yale Veterans Network?

The YVN does important work connecting Yale veterans from all across the University. I am grateful that the YVN has built a community of Yale employees who otherwise would have difficulty finding each other.

Is there anything else that you’d like to add?

I am very honored that you wish to spotlight me even though I am not a veteran. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
